Special Services
Ambulance
Caledon is serviced by the Region of Peel
Ambulance Stations located in Bolton and Caledon. The ambulance service is
dispatched through a central office in Mississauga by calling 9-1-1.
Defibrillation
In January 2004, all Caledon firefighters
were trained to provide defibrillation as part of the patient care to the
residents and visitors of this community. Through generous community contributors,
we were able to purchase nine defibrillator units (one per station).
Medical
The key for survival for both medical and
accident victims is early intervention and emergency treatment. The Caledon
Fire Service averages an 8.5 minute response to all areas within the Town. With
9 fire stations strategically situated in the Town and personnel trained in
basic life support, the Fire Service can provide the necessary attention for
the Emergency Care System.
Motor Vehicle
Extrications
Extrication is a great responsibility that
firefighters train for extensively, including the use of the “Jaws of Life”. Each
station carries a set of Hurst power tools that are carried on the
pumper/rescue vehicles. They are heavy hydraulic cutting tools that pry and
push the vehicle doors open. With the increase of motor vehicle collisions, the
Caledon Fire Service responds effectively with these tools many times in each
year. The firefighters arrive on the scene armed with a vast array of
equipment. This also includes air bags for the heavy lifting of the vehicle.
The most valuable tool of all is the ingenuity and training of the
firefighters. Extrications are performed not only with motor vehicle collisions,
but as a result of a building collapsing, or persons caught in machinery.
Water Rescue
The Town of Caledon is situated inland from
any major bodies of water. However, we have the Humber River that flows from
the east to the west of the Town along with the man made portions of water in
various parks are throughout the Town. We are trained for land based water
rescue incidents that do arise, and all 9 fire stations are equipped with land
based water rescue equipment.
OPEN ACCESS™
The OPEN ACCESS™ alarm
reporting system ensures that Caledon Fire & Emergency Services only
responds to fire alarm signals from a monitored alarm user. We do not respond
to “system trouble” and “supervisory” alarm signals. This allows the fire
service to concentrate solely on fire responses to alarm conditions. When a
fire alarm signal is transmitted directly to the Mississauga Fire &
Emergency Service Computer Dispatch system, the originating alarm company
simultaneously receives the same fire alarm signal and processes it according
to their regular protocols. This includes placing a phone call to the fire service
to ensure the fire alarm signal was received. A monitored alarm user now has the
security of being monitored by the alarm company in addition to a direct link
into the fire service computer system.
